  Target Population
         Steps to Success serves unemployed and underemployed persons who are applying for or receiving Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) or Food Stamps (FS).   Job Search Assistance
         Located at 3975 SE Powell Blvd in Southeast Portland, the STS Southeast program offers a full service Career Center from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Job seekers can use state-of-the-art computer equipment, fax and copy machines and telephones to conduct their job searches. Career Specialist staff is on hand to assist with job search by providing job leads, assisting with applications, cover letters and resumes.

  Work First
         Steps to Success SE offers a full range of workshops to prepare job seekers for work search. Work First is held daily and can be completed within two weeks. Workshops include:

  • CASAS Reading, Math and Writing Assessment
  • Master applications
  • Resumes and cover letters
  • Using the hidden job market
  • Making cold calls

  • Seeking solutions to problems
  • Career Information System and vocational goal setting
  • Using a calendar to manage work and family schedules
  • Dealing with transitions and change
  • Budgeting
  • Tuning the tools of job search

      Individual Job Coaching
             Students work individually with Career Specialists to find appropriate jobs to apply for, to prepare themselves for the workplace, and to conduct daily job search.

      Worksite Training/Internships
             TANF students unable to find work, who have little or no work history, or who are unable to work full time are assisted in finding volunteer work experience to build their employability skills. Worksite Training Coordinators work individually with students to find appropriate worksites, to develop appropriate work skills, and to monitor attendance and performance at the worksite.

      Career Enhancement
             This open-entry class offers computer based training in lifeskills, basic reading and math skills, and self-directed computer instruction is offered daily from 1:00 to 4:00. Students must be referred by their case managers.
