A comprehensive step program dedicated to breaking the cycle of dependency on all levels.  Serves young, homeless, female, head of families ages 17 - 35.  Provides housing, personal & professional skill building.

Provides a 12 - hour program open to the community.  Classes meet for 4 Saturdays. Good opportunity for parents to talk to other parents about problems.  Sample class offerings include: "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk" & " Siblings without Rivalry".

Insights Teen Parent Program, 1808 SE Belmont                                           239-6996

A free parenting program for teen parents with children birth to 34 months & pre-natal. Limited transportation available.  Offers a unique approach designed to support & enhance the trusting, growth - inducing relationships between parents & their very young children.  Parents & child attend the sessions together.  Goals are to: assist parents to know their child in a special way; give parents an opportunity to practice skills in meeting their own & their child's needs in daily situations; provide a safe & fun place for parents & their child to learn & play together; provide times to discuss topics of interest with other parents.

Each quarter offers free & low-fee classes for expectant parents & parenting classes foster parents & guardians.  Pre-registration is required.  Sample classes include: " Understanding Your Toddler's Behavior"," Understanding your Preschoolers's Behavior", "How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk", " Siblings Without Rivalry ", " Parenting Your Teen - A Guide to Survival", "CPR - Infants & Children",  "Understanding Your  6 - 10 Year Old", " "Family Life & Parenting", "Improving Self-Esteem in Adolescents", "Infant Massage", "When I'm in Charge" (8-11). In partnership with VOA, Multnomah County Health Dept., and the Urban League, the Center provides family support services including parent training, child development services, mother/child play groups, home visiting services, information & referral.

Northeast Portland Youth Service Center, 10 N Russell                                280-2642

Free ongoing parent support groups for parents in North/Northeast Portland with children 6-18 years old.  An opportunity for parents to meet other parents & talk about ways to deal with the developing & changing children in their lives.  Information, education & opportunities for learning & sharing are stressed. The main focus is to develop more positive & constructive ways of relating to their children. Counselors brainstorm with parents to determine what their issues are & what they want to learn about. Interested parents are encouraged to co- facilitate support group.

North Portland Youth & Family Center (Delauney), 5139 N Lombard            285-0627

Free parenting classes for North Portland residents with children 9 - 17 years old. Classes offered 3x per  year, 6-week course, 2 hours each class, one evening a week. Primary focus is to assist parents in expanding their parenting skills with their teens & pre-teens.

Weekly meeting offers a variety of topics of interest to parents by either guest speaker or informal discussion. Childcare is available for 6-months to 6 years old.  Meetings are scheduled Sept. - May. Meet Wed.  mornings 9:30am-11: 30am. Drop-ins welcome. Low fees for childcare & meeting attendance.

Janus works with community-based services to enhance the quality of life for children, youth and families. They cater to juvenile offenders, inner city youth and families in crisis, school dropouts and homeless and runaway youth, many of whom have no other resources, no other family.

PCC offers a variety of non-credit parent education classes.  Classes are practical in nature & discuss real life situations & specific problem-solving techniques.  No grading.  Call for information.

Prevention & growth promotion for families with children prenatal to five years.  Interactive groups, parent support groups, clothing , play groups, and family  centered crisis intervention. Waiting list. Free.

Serves parents with preschool and elementary age children in the attendance area of your child's school. Offers a variety of parenting programs.  Subjects addressed include discipline, communications, problem solving, building relationships, personal safety, sexual abuse prevention, drug & alcohol awareness. Classes are free.  Small fee for child care when provided.  Check with your local elementary schools Child Development Specialist or Portland Public Schools Counseling Department for classes.

Program designed to allow pregnant or teen-parent high school students to complete their graduation or GED requirements.  Outreach to new teen parents or those who have dropped out of school; childcare/ parenting classes; support groups; vocational program, case management, child care at 4 school sites.

No longer offers parenting classes.  Offers "Standard First Aid,"  "Infant & Child CPR,""Child care Professionals' First Aid/CPR".   Also offers classes for youth, "When I'm In Charge" & "Babysitting" & "Children's First Aid".
